Auckland first-home buyer? Top 10 locations to watch out for in 2021

Real estate expert Colliers International has revealed a list of the hottest locations in the market for first home buyers.

COVID-19 and the rise of remote working are affecting Kiwi’s attitude to life, work and importantly, property. According to Pete Evans, national director of residential projects at Colliers, lifestyle suburbs will be more and more popular in 2021. Some peripheral towns and suburbs near Auckland have come out on top as the lifestyle dream hubs for residents, including Papatoetoe (South Auckland), Warkworth (Northern Auckland), and some new additions to the development world, Millwater and Long Bay.

Besides the patently popular Auckland suburbs, Tauranga City has been touted to attract many more residents and local travellers. With a bustling lifestyle and a sound economy, Tauranga promises a good future, Evans says.

The top 10 locations to watch out for:

  1. Manukau
  2. Papatoetoe
  3. Mt Roskill
  4. Onehunga
  5. New Lynn
  6. Albany
  7. Long Bay
  8. Millwater
  9. Warkworth
  10. Tauranga

Colliers based the shortlist on factors like affordability (all areas sit in the $700,000-$900,000 price rage), ongoing property development, transport, and infrastructure – all of which are key considerations for first-home buyers looking at dipping their toes in the market.

Is now a good time to buy?

Colliers’ Residential Projects director, Jeff Davidson says now can be a good time to take that all-important first step onto the property ladder: “People realise that there are more employment opportunities in the north, and some city businesses are looking at growth around Silverdale. There’s a new population saying, ‘I don’t need to go into the city to get my entertainment or work.”

Davidson adds that properties are currently more affordable while there are roadworks still in action, but they are likely to get much pricier by 2022 when the works are expected to be complete.
